Teaching Philosophy

Your voice is your identity — an expression of your inner humanity that is deeply personal and entirely your own.

I believe music is for everyone. We all have a voice, and we all should sing. Singing is one of the most personal means of expression we have: a connection of body and spirit, and a way of sharing who we are with the people around us. My teaching begins from honoring that voice, whoever you are and wherever you are starting from.

My Goals for You

Together we will create a lesson plan that supports your individual goals and needs, whether you are an experienced singer or new to vocal study. My goal is to help you discover your instrument’s potential, and to use it in the most healthy and effective way to express the music you want to sing.

My background is as a classical singer, but I have worked with many musical theater singers and am comfortable in popular musical genres as well. I have taught singers of all ages and experience levels.

Experience & Credentials

My students have won awards at NATS competitions, been accepted at major universities, and gone on to careers in music.

What to Expect in a Lesson

Training your voice is like any athletic, physical skill: it takes regular practice and a regular investment of time. A typical lesson starts with a series of exercises that make up your personalized vocal workout regimen. They warm up your voice for the singing you are about to do, and they also build long-term skill and strength. I will help you create a vocal track of these exercises, tailored to your needs, that you can use for your own daily practice.

We then select two or three pieces that you enjoy and that let you apply and grow those skills. These could include songs in different languages for auditions and performances, audition material for musicals, choral parts, or songs of any genre you want to improve. We finish each lesson with a personalized practice plan to follow at home until our next meeting.

Developing your voice is like developing any other part of your body: you will see the most results from regular practice, with lessons to take you to the next stage. I recommend a weekly lesson, where I can assess your progress, adjust your exercises to push you to the next level, and refine and expand your song preparation.

Voice and musicianship lessons follow a similar plan, but spend 15–20 minutes on musicianship skills and less time on song study.

Lesson Subscriptions

Lessons are purchased as a 3-month subscription. This includes 10 lessons scheduled at your convenience, although weekly lessons at a regular time are generally recommended.

Rescheduling

24 hours’ notice is required if you need to reschedule.

Illness

Because the voice reflects our physical state, it is particularly vulnerable to colds and the flu. Singing through a severe cold can not only limit vocal production but also cause damage if the singer tries to force or push the voice. Please listen to your body! If you have a severe sore throat, a very bad cough, or laryngitis, please cancel your lesson. If it is only a slight cold, we can often work around it, focusing instead on music reading skills, memorization, and diction.

Singers of all ages and experience levels are welcome.
